ASSEMBLAGES Looking mainly for wooden and metal objects and collecting what caught my attention because of its shape, color or texture I accumulated over time a wealth of objects taken out of nature’s life cycle as well as man-made and discarded objects. After they have been carefully cleaned and dried, the magical part of the work begins with grouping and arranging different ones to visual impressions of forms in balance, playing with contrast, harmony, and color. Modern society fosters a use-and-toss mentality. My reaction is to yank originally unrelated objects from the darkness of "forgotten-ness" - or from being considered broken and useless - into the light of consciousness where they take on new life in a different context with an altered meaning. I feel inspired by a piece that my god child Jakob gave to me when he was about to enter first grade. I keep it in my studio and so am constantly reminded to look for the child within. The playfulness that we so easily lose as adults - children who are allowed to create out of their imagination have it naturally. PAINTING Here, in the two-dimensional realm, watercolour is my medium of choice, often with added pastel. My themes are abstract whereby I let myself be guided by the colour I begin with. What does it call for? How can I complement what emerges? What forms do gradually show themselves? In painting I try to answer. Moods, gestures appear that might call for an accent with pastel. PHOTOGRAPHY My passion for the patina of corroding iron, for the scars that time and use left behind on rusty metal has found a new expression last summer, after I moved to BC, Canada. In exploring my new terrain I discovered many treasures, which, sitting out in the landscape abandoned and rusting, were too big and heavy to be picked up and incorporated in any assemblage piece. That's when I began to take photos. Bernd Vey unikart studio |
